Types of Colitis

Colitis causes inflammation in the colon part of large intestine. There are different reasons for causing colitis. In each type different body parts get affected by the disease; it can be anything from mouth to anus.

Ulcerative colitis

It affects colon of large intestine. In ulcerative colitis sores or open wounds are formed in the tissue of the colon.
The patient affected by ulcerative colitis shows blood in stool
There is no direct evidence available to prove ulcerative colitis is hereditary. It is found that 90% of the patient didn't have any relative suffered from the colitis. Only 10% of the patient have member of colitis patient

Crohn's colitis

It is also called as granulomatous colitis. In this type of colitis inflammation is shown in any part of the intestine from mouth to anus.
This colitis show effects like diarrhea, vomiting and patient loses body weight
It is autoimmune disease in which the inflammation is caused by the attack of WBC on the tissue of the colon
If in your family anybody is suffering from the crohn's disease then there are chances of transferring disease to the next generation
Some people have smoking habit, it can increase the chances of causing colitis
crohn's patient shows symptoms like diarrhea with or without blood, flatulence, pain in abdomen and swelling around anus

Diversion colitis

Sometime if complicated surgical operations related to the intestine like ileostomy or colostomy can cause colon inflammation before completing a year
Diversion colitis may not be treated completely or it can cure naturally or in some cases treatment is also recommended

Ischemic colitis

If there is not enough supply of the blood to the intestine then it can leads to ischemic colitis. Poor blood supply may cause due to low blood pressure.
Blockage in the blood vessel or constriction in the blood vessel can leads to inadequate supply of the blood
In this type of colitis, if proper treatment is given to the patient, it can cure completely or sometime it can leads to serous problem called sepsis (inflammation in whole body)

Infectious colitis

This type of colitis is caused due to the infection of the bacteria called Clostridium difficile
Infection of the bacteria causes diarrhea. Bacterial infection can detect by examination of stool under microscope.
By giving antibacterial drug infectious colitis can be cured

Collagenous colitis

This type shows inflammation in the colon part. Exact reason of causing collagenous colitis is not known.
Non-steroids can induce collagenous colitis
Treatment for this type is quite tricky as compare to others but some drugs like corticosteroids are available to treat collagenous colitis

Chemical colitis

Chemical colitis is caused due to the side or direct effect of strong chemical on the tissue of the colon
Sometime before or during any surgery or treatment, chemicals are introduced in the colon can leads to inflammation in colon

Lympocytic colitis

WBC is accumulated in between layers of epithelium and connective tissue of colon leading to swelling.
The correct reason of the lymphocytic colitis is not known but it can cause due to over activity of immune system
