What is Throat Cancer?

The cancer develops in the voice box or larynx or the other parts of the pipe of wind is known as throat cancer or laryngeal. The throat area contains two tubes such as one food pipe known as oesophagus and another wind pipe. The larynx is present at the top of wind pipe. Two vocal cords are present in it which produces the sound after passing air through them. Vocal cord system of each individual is different therefore sound created by them also different and each individual has its own voice.

Causes of Throat Cancer

The most common risk factor for developing throat cancer is use of tobacco. Both the smokeless and smoking tobacco develops the cancer in throat and mouth.

Throat Cancer Symptoms

The throat cancer symptoms are not identified early and unluckily, if they are identified early then it is compared with other illness or the conditions. Some of general throat cancer symptoms are given below:

  • Chronic earaches
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Chronic sore throat
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Hoarse voice
  • Feelings of numbness in the face
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Visible sores in the mouth or on the tongue.

    The difference between the milder cancer and severe cancer are based on duration of the throat cancer symptoms. Persisting and chronic cases of these symptoms may point to the throat cancer.

    When you see any of these symptoms or combination of symptoms then take the medical advice. Even if you does not have the throat cancer, medical advice is helpful for ruling out serious cause.

    Diagnosing Throat Cancer

    For diagnosing the throat cancer, starts with the trip to otorhinolaryngologist. Otorhinolaryngologist is a surgeon who firstly asks about your medical history and family background. Doctor then checks the inside and outside area of the neck. Some of the cases doctor takes the samples of the tissues known as biopsy and send to the lab for testing.

    If the result of lab reflects that, patient have the throat cancer then will perform some other tests for determining how far the cancer has spread. The following tests are performed:

    If you are using the diagnostic procedure, then keep in mind that this procedure takes months because doctor needs to perform many tests and the result will be examined in the lab. Once the doctor known the type of cancer then starts the particular treatment.

    Treatment of Throat Cancer

    Surgery :If the tumor is localized and small then surgery will successfully removes the cancer with the occurrence of some side effects. But if the throat cancer is severe and if it is spreads to other parts of the body then surgery will wide. In this surgery, need to remove the parts of the body such as mouth, jaw, voice box or may be your throat. In this situation, ability to chew, speak, swallow and breathe can become difficult. Reconstructive surgery may be helpful for restoring the appearance and the rehabilitate swallowing and speech functions. Prosthetic devices in the mouth can replace detached portion of the mouth such as gums, teeth and jaw. In advanced conditions, you may use tubes for breathing and feeding and for speaking use the artificial voice aid.

    You also take the advice of the speech language pathologist, who assists you with the problems related with speaking and swallowing. Also you work with the dietitian, who give advice to you that which healthy food is used that are easy for chewing and swallowing.

    Radiation Therapy

    Radiation therapy is a primary therapy and used on the small tumors. This therapy is also used after the surgery or even with the combination with chemotherapy for the advanced tumors.

    Chemotherapy

    For killing the cancer cells, chemotherapy is used. In this therapy drugs are used. For treating the throat cancer, doctor will use effective drugs or the drugs with any combination. For destroying the tumor, doctor uses very ways to combine this chemotherapy with other types of therapies or other forms used in the treatment. They also stop the disease from spreading to other parts of the body. The chemotherapy is given in combination with radiation therapy, when the tumor is advanced.
