Symptoms of Colitis Disease

In colitis, colon of the large intestine swells which shows effect on the intestine as well as other parts of the body. The symptoms shown by the disease are as follows.

Symptoms related to intestine

Pain in abdomen

Person shows pain in abdomen like cramps in stomach, person feels discomfort in abdomen.
Upper and lower part of the abdomen shows pain.
When person feels pain in the abdomen he should immediately visit doctor, because proper diagnosis is very necessary before starting any treatment.

Diarrhea

In colitis, the colon of the intestine swells and does not function properly. This can leads to watery persistent diarrhea.
Mostly, middle to old age women are affected by this disease.
In ulcer, inner linings of the colon starts bleeding; sores developed from this bleeding pass thick smear of blood through the stools.
Sometime sores get infected with the bacteria like Helicobacter pylori leading to passing of blood, mucus and pus along with stool

Bloating and gas

Colitis patient releases the foul smelled gas from the anus at the time of eating food or after the food.
The air swallows involuntarily at the time of eating food or talking while eating food or if, you are eating food containing green vegetables then it can also leads to formation of gas.
To avoid gas formation doesn't talk while chewing food it will avoid formation of gas to some extent. eating chewing gum is a bad habit

Granuloma

In granuloma, immune cells accumulate at the infected tissues of the colon and form a small ball like structure.
In granuloma immune cells recognized the infection but not able to eliminate it.
Granuloma is helpful for diagnosis of the Crohn's disease.

Loss of appetite

This is most common symptom of the disease. This is an indication that your body is not working properly. Actually, you should take it seriously and should visit your family doctor.
In colitis affected patient, he/she does not like to eat anything which results in loss of weight.
If you neglect it then it can leads to serious effect on your body.

Ulcers
Infection by the virus can leads to formation of the open wound or injury in the tissue of the colon called as ulcer.

Symptoms not related to the intestine

Fever
When the disease to its active stage fever can occur in high or low grade. Many times the inflammatory reactions lead to increase in temperature of the body. Many times fever can be seen at night time.

Eye inflammation
Colitis shows swelling in the eyes may be due to the conjunctivitis or uveitis or iritis. Most of the times in ulcerative colitis eyes get affected.

Fissure
The opening of the anus shows small tear leads to pain and bleeding.
