What is Workplace Stress?
Stress-related disorders come from a series of conditions that put stress on the person's mind. Nowadays, many people spend most of the time of day at their workplace with a busy schedule. Spending such long hours at workplace will affects one's relationship and personal life. Workplace stress becomes a serious problem when the worker or employee is discomforted at work and cannot differentiate between needs and facilities. It affects his/her emotional response to the people and incidents occurring around him or her.
Workplace stress results into various psychological conditions that include three types of emotional strains:
- Psychological Disorder: Depression, traumatic stress disorder, anxiety,
- Maladaptive Behaviors: Aggression and substance abuse
- Other: Dissatisfaction, tension and fatigue, headache, sleep disturbance.
Causes of Workplace Stress
The primary cause of workplace stress is the difference between the workplace conditions and the worker's characteristics. Working conditions get worse when poor relationship among colleagues and personal problems come to pressurize a person while working. Some times cutbacks in job affects the psychology of a person so much that it does not allow him or her to work peacefully and full heartedly.
The status of a person in office can affect stress levels. Workplace stress is more likely affect to employees who are less powerful or don't have control over work at the workplace. Especially, manager level workers mostly suffer from the workplace stress.
Economic factors also cause many problems for employees in 21st century. The researchers believe that revolution in computer and communication has raised the graph of expectations from employees and has put pressure on them. Some of the major economic factors that cause the workplace stress:
- The lack of professional union for trade at workplace.
- Instability of investors from the company stock.
- Rivalry between two companies that affects the global competition of that company.
- The changing policies of company that make the employees uninsured of their future.
Workplace Stress Management
- Learn to leave personal or family problems outside the workplace. Personal problems will cause the stressful condition while working.
- Try to seek help from others when you cannot control things. Sometimes, you need to surrender yourself before the condition that doesn't mean you have to take it personally.
- Avoid completing your work at the deadline. That will increase the pressure of your work.
- Communicate with other employees in the company to solve problems. When you are working in a group you must build a healthy relationship with your colleagues.
- Form a positive attitude about work. Do not consider your job as burden on yourself. This will make you enjoy your work, and you can easily complete your tasks.
- Smile and be self-motivated
In short, workplace stress is sometimes nothing but the side-effect of your negative attitude for your job. Change in lifestyle and concentration on work will help you get relief from workplace stress.
