Stomach Cancer Survival
Stomach cancer survival rates are generally based on the percentage of the patients who live after the diagnosis of stomach cancer. These patients survive for certain period after the diagnosis. The stomach cancer survival rates are mostly five-year survival rates, and they are based on the relative survival rates. In this type of survival rates the number of the patients of stomach cancer is compared to the general population. The survival rates presented in this article are based on the survey from 1995 to 2001.
The stomach cancer survival rates include the patients who are suffering from a few or no symptoms of stomach cancer after the treatment and the patients that are still receiving the treatment for it. Basically, survival rates are based on the different groups of people, so it is difficult to predict about a particular patient's future. Since every patient has its own characteristics, so the treatment varies from one patient to another.
Factors Affecting Survival Rates
There are some factors that affect the stomach cancer survival rates. These factors include:
- The stage of stomach cancer
- The patient's health
- The spread of the cancer
- Age of the patient
- Treatment method
Stomach Cancer Survival Rates
Stomach cancer survival rates can be measured by several different methods, and they are used for different purposes. The five year relative survival rates based on the sex and race are given below:
- 19.9% in white men
- 21.5% in black men
- 23.5% in white women
- 24.2% black women
Survival Rates Based on the Stage
The stage of stomach cancer is an important factor in survival rates.
- When the stomach cancer is in the early stage, 24% cases of stomach cancer are diagnosed
- 32% cases are diagnosed when the stomach cancer has reached lymph nodes
- 32% of stomach cancer cases are diagnosed that are at advanced stage
- 12% cases diagnosed for stomach cancer are not clear in the exact stage
The survival rates as per the stages are:
- 58% cases are at primary level
- 22% secondary stage
- 3% distant cases
- 12.5% undetected cases
The stomach cancer survival rate is basically determined by the study of large group of people divided into different races, sex, immune systems and the regional characteristics.
Five-year relative rate is mostly used type of survival rates of cancer disease. These survival rates also include the diagnosis methods like endoscopy, blood tests and the tool tests that help to understand the change in survival rates.
