Stomach Cancer Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is used to kill the stomach cancer cells using high power x-rays. There are two types of radiation therapies- First, external radiation therapy in which radiations are releases from the machine that is placed outside the body, and second, internal radiation therapy in which the radioactive substance is placed near the cancer affected area with the help of needles and catheters. Radiation therapy also has some side effects when it is used for the stomach cancer. These side effects involve diarrhea, nausea, fatigue and stomach pain.

What is Radiation Therapy?

Radio therapy uses the high energy waves for the cancer treatment. It is not used for the treatment of the stomach cancer in early stage, but its combination with chemotherapy is helpful to prevent the recurrence of the cancer after the surgery. Radiation therapy is very effective for the treatment of the advanced stomach cancer. It also helps to stop the bleeding, which generally starts in advanced cancer.

How Radiation Therapy Works?

The doctor uses a stimulator machine that kills the cancer cells. While destroying the cancer cells is it also important that other normal cells should not be damaged in this process. A pinprick tattoo is marked at the place of cancer for the radiation. This line or mark is taken as the target place for the radiation during the treatment. The radiation therapy will be applied after a regular break. Sometimes this break can be of a few days. The actual radiation will be for few minutes.

Side effects of Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy can cause some side effects depending upon the affected part of the body and its treatment type. Radiation therapy used for stomach cancer may cause:

• Stomach pain
• Intestine pain
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Dry and red skin
• Tiredness or weakness
• Hair loss

If a person is suffering from the advanced stomach cancer, there will not be many side effects. That patient needs to have the anti sickness drug to feel better. Side effects of radiation therapy used for stomach cancer usually disappear after the treatment is over. Though some patients do not feel comfortable after the treatment, but the side effects can be managed after a few days automatically. Therefore, doctors advise the patients to be active
