Sinus Surgery
Sinus infection can be treated with different therapies that include drugs and antibiotics. Some people suffer from the chronic sinus infection and fungal sinus infection, so they use medications and other home remedies for its treatment. In most of the complicated cases of sinus infection, surgery has been very effective for the treatment.
Sinus surgery is performed with the help of fiberoptic nasopharyngoscop, which is also used in diagnosing the sinus infection. Sinus surgery is especially performed to remove the mucosal obstruction in nostrils, widen the passageway in it and to make the flow easy in sinuses. Sometimes, nasal polyps are removed during the surgery. A nasal septum is also straightened to improve the airflow.
It is also necessary to use antibiotics and nasal steroids for a long period after the sinus surgery. If a person frequently suffers from sinus infection, it should be taken carefully to detect whether it is a bacterial infection or normal disease. It may be a type of fungi that need to be treated with antifungal medications.
Sinus surgeries are mostly used for the chronic cases when the recommended medicines cannot prove effective. It is prescribed to a person who frequently suffers from these infections. Hence, sinus surgery is recommended as the last remedy for sinus infections and diseases.
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is considered as a permanent solution for the recurring sinusitis. This surgery includes the removal of infected tissues in nasals. The purpose of this surgery is to expand the sinus passage for better drainage. FESS also uses image guided surgery in which CT scan is used to locate the exact location of the infected tissues and the instruments used to remove these tissues. This surgery depends upon the three dimensional mapping.
Another option available for the surgery is of Image Guided System (IGS), which is known as the minimal-invasive operation. This operation is done within the nostrils without any external instrument. This technology has been effective to help the ENT specialist to detect the infected tissues in sinus that need surgery.
This method of surgery resolves the primary cause of the sinus infection. It also doesn’t have any severe side effects after the surgery. A person will only feel minor discomfort after the operation. Other side effects like swelling and scarring are not found in this type of sinus surgery.
Endoscopic sinus surgery reduces the complications in the sinus surgeries. Image Guided System is very helpful for the patients with facial deformities. Patients who have gone through FESS can recover within ten days after the surgery. Medications and intravenous infusion line (IV) are also used to make the patient feel relax.
