Rilutek-ALS Treatment
Rilutek is the first treatment which is approved by the FDA for the people having ALS. However, it is not cure. It has been used by doctors and Neurologists for more than 13 years. It is the treatment that gives you more time to enjoy with your loved ones or to plan activities and events with those who are very important for them.
The people, who took Rilutek, lived longer with average of 2 to 3 months. It was concluded that, those who haven the rilutek after 18 months and those who took placebo were not having any difference. It means that, Rilutek offers benefits in early treatment of ALS.
How it works?
However, there is no any idea about how the ALS affects the body, but the researches are going on to improve the effect of treatment. The chemical called glutamate, which is naturally produced in the body, is very helpful to control the motor neurons. It may build up to high level if there is ALS.
Too much exposure to the glutamate may harm, injure or burn out nerve cells and make them unable to work. Rilutek is the treatment that decreases the release of glutamate to protect the nerve cells from exposure to the glutamate.
The treatment is very beneficial if it is used at the beginning of the disease. The patient may not notice any improvement while taking rilutek, but according to studies, the treatment gives long live for the patients having ALS.
About Rilutek:
It is the member of class benzothiazole having 2-amino-6-benzothiazole with molecular formula C8H5F3N2OS and molecular weight 234.2. It is a yellow powder and is soluble in dimethylformamide, methanol, dimethylsulfoxide, 0.1 N HCL and very slightly soluble in 0.1 N NaOH and water.
It is available in the form of tablet which is capsule shaped, film coated, white tablet containing 50 mg of riluzole.
Other information regarding to rilutek:
- It should not be taken if there is any type of allergy.
- Consult your doctor if there is fever while taking rilutek.
- There may be side effects due to rilutek such as nausea, weakness and decrease in lung function, headache and runny nose.
- There is no need to take extra tablets if you have missed or skipped a dose.
- You have to tell your doctor about the other medicines if you are going to take it along with the rilutek
