Rabies Vaccination
Rabies vaccines can prevent the rabies disease effectively. However, the vaccine is very effective when it is given to a person who has just started to show the rabies symptoms. It can also be used before the person is exposed to the virus or a person who is at high risk of rabies.
Rabies vaccines also have some side effects like nausea, headache, pains on the part where injection is given, dizziness and fever. Some rabies vaccines are also available for domestic animals. The best way to be secure from rabies is to vaccinate your pets regularly.
Vaccination is the most efficient way of preventing the rabies infection among animals. Several vaccines are used for all pets. Hence, the vaccination should be done time to time on the pets to avoid any chance of getting rabies infection. These vaccines must be given by a licensed specialist.
Pre-Exposure Vaccine
People who have most chances to get infected by rabies virus are treated by the pre-exposure vaccine. These people include-
- People that work in laboratories, people who are frequently come into the contact with animals and veterinarians.
- Those who come in contact with rabid dogs, raccoons, cats, bats, and other animals, which are more susceptible for the rabies virus.
- Travelers that travel to the rabies infected area like Asia, Latin America and Africa.
Rabies vaccination is frequently done for the people who are working in the research laboratories where they come into the contact with rabies virus. Their blood samples are regularly tested and the booster vaccine is given whenever necessary. Generally, pre-exposure vaccine is not recommended in normal situations.
Post-Exposure Rabies Vaccine
Post-exposure vaccine is recommended when someone is exposed to the rabies virus or a person is infected by it. It is important to start post-exposure treatment immediately after the exposure to the virus to avoid the serious effects of rabies disease. It is observed that post-exposure vaccine is successful to stop the development of rabies if the vaccine is given on time.
The rabies vaccine is helpful to stimulate the immune system of an infected person for the production of antibodies that reduce the rabies virus' effect. Hence, the immune system works to prevent the rabies virus from reaching the brain and cause any serious damage to it.
Side Effects of Rabies Vaccine
Previously, the old rabies vaccines cause severe pains, as they are given in the abdomen of the patient. This treatment was used to go for at least three weeks. As if now, new rabies vaccines are developed that are given into the arm instead of the abdomen. However, these new vaccines also can cause some side effects that include:
- Nausea
- Fewer
- Pains and itching at the site of injection
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Muscle aches
One of the best ways to be safe from the rabies virus is to vaccinate all the pets and keep these vaccines always available. These vaccines are applied after every three years according to the vaccine type of the animals.
