Rabies Diagnosis
The diagnosis of rabies is based on the information of the type of animal, whether that animal has vaccinated or not, and the place where the animals has bitten. The exposure to rabies virus is carefully observed to make the diagnosis for proper treatment. Hence, one must seek to hospital immediately after the bite of animal.
It becomes difficult to diagnose the rabies based on the symptoms, as these symptoms are very similar to symptoms of other diseases. If the animal is captured and the doctor is suspicious about the rabies infection, the doctor can recommend some tests to make the diagnosis more effective.
Tests for Rabies
Rabies tests are performed for both humans and animals. There are different tests for humans and animals.
- Rabies Tests for Humans
However, a single test is not sufficient for the rabies diagnosis. These tests are performed with the help of samples of spinal fluid, skin biopsies, serum and saliva. The samples are taken immediately after the animal bite.
- Rabies Test for Animals
The Direct Fluorescent Antibody Test (DFA) is mostly performed to the animals suspected to be infected of rabies. In this test, brain tissues of the rabid animal are taken for the diagnosis; the test is only possible after the death of the animal.
- Laboratory Tests
The laboratory tests are always been essential, reliable and generally accepted in many parts of the world. DFA is the standard test for the rabies diagnosis. This test is mostly used and recognized for the thorough evaluation of the diagnosis. In United States, almost all the laboratories use this test for the rabies infected rabid animals.
Laboratory tests of rabies for animals and humans for proper and immediate treatment to stop its side effects. After a couple of hours of these tests, doctors can understand whether the animal or the person is infected or not by the rabies virus. These tests also help the patient from the unnecessary burden of rabies treatment if everything is normal.
The immediate diagnosis should be done when an individual shows some characteristic symptoms of rabies, especially when the neurological problems are created. Sometimes even the doctors cannot recognize the rabies infection, as these cases appear rarely. Therefore, specialized medical centers are recommended for the diagnosis of rabies. The tests are performed on the saliva, spinal fluid, blood of the rabies infected person.
