Pregnancy and Diabetes
Women can suffer from diabetes during pregnancy. It shows sudden increase in the level of blood sugar. Diabetes is harmful for the fetus as well as for the mother. Advanced techniques are available for recognizing and controlling diabetes in fetus and mother.
Alert for pregnant women
- The pregnant woman should test the blood sugar, if she has family history of diabetes
- If glucose is detected in the sample of urine and blood
- If she has had large baby before
- Over weight
- Age of the pregnant woman is more than twenty five years
Effect on fetus
- Take care, if you have high blood sugar level.
- Placenta is an organ, which connects mother and developing fetus
- Placenta transfers all required nutrients to the fetus
- Sugar transfers from mother to fetus through placenta
- Because sugar size of the child increases as compared to normal development
- Large size of the baby can create problems during delivery
- There may be possibility of caesarean operation
- Baby may have breathing problems called as Respiratory distress syndrome
- High sugar level affects the fetus development including development of skeleton, heart and brain,
Problem during pregnancy
- In gestational diabetes level of glucose increases
- It leads to early delivery of the baby, caesarean birth
After pregnancy
There are two possibilities after the childbirth. The diabetes may be cured or sometimes it increases the risk of type II diabetes in future
Diabetic woman and pregnancy
- Take more precautions, if you have diabetes
- Before conceiving take care that your blood sugar level is under control
- Reduce your body weight to normal
- It is dangerous for the developing fetus, if the sugar level is high in mother before first three months of pregnancy
Treatment for gestational diabetes
- Avoid diet containing carbohydrate
- Strictly stop smoking and alcohol drinking. Both are hazardous for fetus health
- Keep away from drinks containing caffeine e.g. cola and coffee
- Do regular exercise
- Insulin injection, if necessary
- Regular blood sugar check up
- Regular check up of the fetus by using ultra sound scan
There is no need to worry, if you are diabetes patient and want to conceive. Try to balance your food and regular life style. Exercise regularly, it will keep you slim and maintain blood sugar level to normal.
