Muscle Stimulation Disorders
Muscle stimulation (motor neuron) is the disorders that are distinguished by progressive deterioration of the nerves and the involvement of other structures in the muscle movement. Generally it happens if the motor neurons do not able to stimulate muscles normally.
This disease includes various disorders from which amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is one of the most common disorders. The person with the disease mostly faces to the weakening and wastage of muscles because of which the movements becomes stiff, awkward and clumsy.
The disease may diagnosed by tests such as electromyography, blood tests and magnetic resonance imaging. However, there is no any permanent and result oriented treatment for the disease but it can be cured.
The normal connection of muscle tissue and nerve between muscle and brain are important for normal function of muscle. While in case of muscle stimulation disorders the motor nerves are not able to stimulate muscles normally. Because of which the muscles becomes weak and waste away.
This muscle stimulation disorders includes primary lateral sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, progressive bulbar palsy, progressive muscular atrophy, progressive pseudobulbar palsy, progressive bulbar palsy and postpolio syndrome.
These are very common symptoms and always found in the people in their 50s. Yet, there is no any exact reason found behind the disease, but it may be of hereditary type. All these disorders causes to muscle weaken that may lead to paralysis. The symptoms are very common that doesn't give any pain and changes in sensation. However, the person with this disease may undergo depression, which is very common symptom.
There are some types of disorders such as:
- Amyotropic lateral Sclerosis: This is a progressive disorder that begins with weakness that may found in hands, feet or mouth and in throat also. Weakness usually proceeds up the arm and leg and progress on one side of the body. There may be cramps before the weakness. People with this disorder may lose weight and may feel tiredness.
The patient feels increase in weakness because of that muscle becomes tight and twitch. Tremors may also happen. Because of weakened muscles in the throat, the patient may feel difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia) and speaking (dysarthria). It is unable to control the emotional feelings for the patients if the disorder progresses. There may be possibility of crying or laughing inappropriately in this condition. The muscles involved in breathing can also get weakened that lead to breathing problems.
- Primary Lateral Sclerosis and Progressive Pseudobulbar Palsy: These disorders are very rare and slowly progressive. While, it mainly affects on the legs and arms. The face, jaw and throat muscles can be get affected by the progressive pseudobulbar palsy disorder. In this disorder the emotions may be changeable. People with this disorder may switch from happiness to sadness very quickly without any reason.
- Progressive Bulbar Palsy: This disorder mainly affects the nerves that control muscles of talking, chewing, swallowing. The voice may also change or may become a nasal tone. Some people may feel change in emotions. People may get problem in swallowing, because of that saliva and food gets inhale into the lungs and causes gagging and choking increasing the risk of pneumonia.
- Progressive Muscular Atrophy: It can develop at any age and is similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, it progress very slowly and didn't give any severe muscle weakness. This disorder shows the early symptoms such as twitching and involuntary contractions of muscle fibers. The disease first affect to the hands and then arms, shoulders and legs and eventually the whole body get affected. The people with this disorder may survive for at least 25 years or longer.
- Postpolio Syndrome: The possibility of this disorder is more in people who have had polio. In this condition, the person may feel tiredness, pain and weakness after 15 years or more than after recovery of polio. However, in some people who have had polio, the symptoms are not due to postpolio syndrome but to the development of new disorder.
