Medication for Ulcer, Prescription for Ulcer

Doctors, generally, treat the stomach ulcer by suggesting the patient to change the lifestyle and diet. In some cases, where these treatment methods do not work, doctors use medicines like proton-pump inhibitors, mucosal protective agents and H-2 blockers. If these medicines prove infective in treating the ulcer, the patient needs to go through the surgery. While treating the H.pylori infection, these medicines can be combined with antibiotics.

  • H2 Blockers
Ulcer is associated with the acids that are produced by the stomach. H2 blockers reduce the level of these acids. H2 blockers involve different medicines like famotidine (Pepcid), rantidine (Zantac), nizatidine (Axid) and cimetidine (Tagamet). Patients who take these medicines can feel relaxed within four to six weeks after the first dose.

  • Mucosal Protective Agents
These agents control the acids from lining mucous. Mucosal protective agents include the medicines like misoprostal (Cytotec) and sucralfate (Sulcrate) that are the prescribed medications for ulcer treatment. The non-prescribed medications are bismuth subsalicylate and antacids.

  • Proton Pump Inhibitors
These inhibitors help to modify the acid production by the stomach. This process can be considered as the final step for the acid secretion. About 95% of the acid production can be suppressed by these inhibitors. Generally, these inhibitors are prescribed in the cases where ulcer cannot be treated by the other medications and H-2 receptors.

  • Antibiotics
High doses of antibiotic therapy can be used for the treatment of H.pylori. Researchers believed that more than 70% of the ulcer cases have recurring diseases in which the antibacterial therapies have not used. Antibiotics can be used through two types of therapies:

  • Antacid
However, antacid cannot cure the ulcer permanently, but many patients feel comfortable using the antacid. The antacid ingredient that includes calcium carbonate can cause the increase in the level of acid production by the stomach after 3-4 hours. Some of the antacids contain the aspirin for treating the prolonged ulcer. As antacids are not permanent cure for the stomach ulcer, some times antacids can support the conditions of ulcer.

  • Natural Cures
Natural cures are always beneficial for ulcer treatment, as they don't have any side effects. Natural treatment for the ulcer is an alternative medication that includes the proper nutritional supplements, diet and herbal medicines. Other medicines like Homeopathy, Ayurvedic and acupuncture are also worth to be used as the alternative medications for ulcer that have no side effects. Hence, many people in the world trust these therapies than the drugs with side effects.
