Living with Adult ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a childhood developmental problem. The condition can be distinguished by hyperactivity, inattention and impulsiveness. It is true that the symptom mostly occurs in childhood but the symptoms may also continue in adulthood.
ADHD and Adults:
The disease gives trouble to approximately 3% to 5% of school age children and about 60% get diagnosed and maintained in their adulthood. Mostly, the men get affected with the disease than females in childhood.
Person living with ADHD experience the problems such as;
- Anxiety
- Difficulty in controlling anger
- Problems regarding to employment
- Impulsiveness
- Weak organization skills
- Procrastination
- Mistreatment or addiction of something
- Lack of self confidence
- Low irritation tolerance
- Difficulties in concentration
- Chronic boredom
- Relationship problems
- Mood swings
- Depression
These behavioral changes may be mild or some time severe. However, some adult may concentrate in their work or whatever they are doing if they take that work interestingly, but some face difficulties to understand and focus the work.
Sometimes there may be difficulty for the family members accepting the diagnosis of ADHD. They may also want to avoid this problem but finally come to know that the behavior fells to solve the problems.
However, note that having ADHD is not responsible for reducing someone's personal responsibility of behavior. They must have to try themselves to reduce the symptoms or change themselves.
Below are some ways that the person with ADHD can refer to diagnose the disease;
- Learn some techniques to control impulsive behavior.
- Keep yourself fit with regular physical exercise that gives nervous energy and feelings of agitation.
- Minimize disturbance while trying to focus something.
- Avoid or reduce alcohol and drug, which is responsible for creating mental state and make unable to learning and change.
- Try to maintain a sense of humor that will help to control the conditions such as depression and discourage.
- Stay with medication and psychotherapy as treatment recommendation.
- Try to finish tasks and improve organization skills.
- Remember important details and commitments. Take help of your friends or family members to complete tasks.
- Be thankful for the support that friends and family have given you.
- Ask for help whenever you need.
Even though, most of people with ADHD accepts the condition and spends their lives as it is, but that creates various problems future life. Appropriate management of the ADHD difficulties can help adults to develop personal strength and become successful throughout their lives.
