Diagnosis of Diabetes
Many times, it happens that person may not know that he/she is suffering from diabetes. In diabetes, the patient may not show any symptoms. Therefore, it becomes quite difficult to know whether a person is suffering from diabetes or not.
Who needs diagnosis?
- In your family, if there is any close relative like brother, sister or parents are diabetic. Then you need to do a blood test for the detection of sugar level.
- If, you are not physically active
- Blood pressure is exceeding 140/90 mmHg or more
- Reproductive problem in females like polycystic ovary
- Having rashes on the skin and neck
- If you have problems related to the heart, blood pressure or blood vessels
- Family history of heart attack, blood pressure or diabetes
- If, you are overweight or obese
Why diagnosis is necessary?
- Diagnosis for any kind of disease is necessary to give correct treatment
- Regular blood sugar check up for diabetes patient is needed for continuing or replacing the treatment
- According to sugar level you can adjust your diet, medicines as well as exercise
The patient shows symptoms when
- The function of the pancreas has stopped or is disturbed
- Body does not give response to insulin
- Enough amount of insulin is not available
Testes for diagnosis of diabetes
For diagnosing diabetes, following are the standard testes for diagnosing diabetes
Fasting blood glucose
- This test is taken when a person hasn't had food or drinks (except water) eight to ten hours back
- Mostly, in the morning, blood of the patient is collected for testing
- In fasting, if the range of the sugar level in blood is 126mg/dl or more, then a person is suffering from diabetes
- 70 to 110 mg/dl is the fasting level for a person who is not suffering from diabetes
- This is a common test mostly used for diagnosing the sugar level in the blood
Blood glucose
- Level of glucose in the blood is tested for diagnosis of diabetes
- There is no need of fasting for this test
- If a person has glucose level of more than 200mg/dl, then it confirms that a person is suffering from diabetes
- For urgent sugar level detection this test is performed
- This test is very easy and result can be drawn within few minutes
- From this test the sugar level along with the level of insulin is detected
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
- In this test a person is asked to drink something sweet
- After drinking sweet or sugary drink, it is observed how insulin in your body can manage the glucose
- In this test before drinking, glucose level is measured
- After two hours of drinking, glucose level is measured after every half an hour
- In a normal person, the blood sugar level increases and decreases after some time
- Normally, insulin is synthesized by pancreas, which reduces sugar level in the blood
- If, the patient is diabetic then the blood sugar level increases and remains constant
- In the blood, insulin is absent or not functioning properly, therefore the sugar level does not show any decrease
