Diagnosis of Colitis
Diagnosis is very important step before starting any treatment. Doctor always asks for proper diagnosis and then only starts treatment to the patient. There are different testes used to detect the presence of colitis.
Blood test
- Blood test plays very important role in screening, identifying and management of the colitis disease.
- From the blood test doctor can come to know about the number of blood cells present. Increased number of the WBC shows some problem in the defense mechanism. Less number of the RBC shows anemia.
- In the blood test of the colitis patient, the total number of the WBC is more as compare to normal count
- Increased number of the WBC shows inflammation or swelling
- The invasion of any foreign body like bacteria can stimulate production of WBC
- Inflammation is also detected by the number of RBC called sedimentation rate. More number of RBC shows swelling in the colon.
Colonoscopy
- In colonoscopy, colon can be observed by sending CCD camera or fiber optic camera along with the lighted flexible tube from the anus
- To observe the damage inside the colon colonoscopy is very essential
- With help of colonoscopy doctor can observe and study the damage closely.
- On the computer the 2D and 3D pictures can be observed
- From colonoscopy doctor can detect infection, inflammation in the tissue of colon as well as if there is possibility of cancer then it can also detect in the colonoscopy
Biopsy
- Sometime doctor needs to observe the tissue under microscope, it is called biopsy
- If there is any infection in the colon then sample of the colon can be taken to observe the damage as well as infection
- This test is important for observation of the tissue structure without any disturbance to the arrangement of the cell
X-ray of abdomen
- Before taking X-ray photograph, barium enema is given to the patient
- Barium enema is white barium liquid, filled in the tube and inserted into the colon through the anus
- Colon is filled completely and then X-ray photographs are taken and observed on a video monitor
- Problem like swelling or damage in the colon and rectum can be detected through this way Arteriogram of abdomen
- This test is used to detect the blockage or damage in the arteries
- Any blockage or narrow lumen of arteries shows swelling on the colon part
- Sometime to get good and clear information colored dye can be injected in to the arteries and then X-ray images are taken
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen
- In magnetic resonance imaging, small problem in the blood vessels or problem in the tissue can be detected
- From this test colitis can detect very clearly
Computerized tomography (CT) scans
- Computerized tomography (CT) scan
- In this test images are taken in cross sections.
- This test is useful to detect any blockage or clotting in blood vessels.
- If there is any thickness or swelling in the tissue of the colon then it can detect immediately.
Stool
Stool examination provides information about any infection which can leads to sore formation or colitis.
