Dehydration during Pregnancy
When the water or fluid level in the body decreases from the normal level, it can lead to dehydration. In pregnancy period, dehydration can cause serious effect on the body. There are more chances of dehydration in pregnant women because in pregnancy, the requirement of the body is more because of developing embryo.
Morning sickness
- Most of the pregnant women suffer from morning sickness. In this condition woman feel nauseous and vomit in the morning
- Some women show frequent vomiting which can cause dehydration. After vomiting body loses more amounts of water and vitamins which can affect body weight and health of the fetus.
- Mostly in pregnancy period, dehydration can causes harmful effects in first three months of pregnancy.
Effect of dehydration before three months of pregnancy
- Dehydration is not a serious disorder but in some women it shows harmful effects. If a pregnant woman is suffering from dehydration in the starting period of pregnancy then it can affect the fetus development.
- For proper functioning of the body water level in the body is necessary. Dehydration can disturb the normal functions carried out in the body.
- Fetus is surrounded by the fluid called amniotic fluid. Dehydration of the mother can affect the level of the amniotic fluid
- If the amniotic fluid decreases then there are more chances of developing abnormalities in the formation of organs like legs and arms
- It is seen that dehydration can cause miscarriage. Therefore if, a pregnant woman is not able to keep anything in her stomach and vomiting constantly then doctor can hospitalize her under observation. She can keep under observation until her vomiting stops.
Effect of dehydration after three months of pregnancy
- In summer season, pregnant woman should take more care and avoid dehydration by drinking more water or other healthy fluids
- If pregnant woman is suffering from dehydration after three months then it could be harmful to both mother and fetus
- Dehydration can results in the contraction of the abdominal muscles called as premature labor
- If such condition arises then immediately drink two full glass of water and take rest. If you feel better then immediately visit the doctor.
Precaution
- In pregnancy you need to take more care as there is a fetus in your body absorbing nourishment. therefore dehydration is always harmful for fetus as well as for mother
- In whole gestation period try to avoid dehydration. You can drink ten to twelve full glasses of water in a day.
- In regular diet add green vegetables and fruits. It will not only balance fluid in the body but also fulfill the requirement of the nutrients.
- Strictly avoid consumption of alcohol and the drinks containing caffeine like coffee. It can increase the dehydration rate
- Dehydration can causes headache, weakness and dizziness in such condition you visit your doctor immediately
