Colon Cancer Survival Rate
Cancer is a very tricky disease; there are many types of cancers related to different organs. Survival of the patient depends on factors like diagnosis of stage and type of treatment given to the patient. Percentage of survival rate gives us guidelines about the disease.
There are following factors on which survival of the patient is dependent
Location of tumor
- Colon is divided into three parts: ascending, transverse and descending colon. Small intestine continues into ascending colon and descending part leads to rectum. Part in between ascending and descending colon is called as transverse colon
- The rate of survival of the patient depends on the location of tumor in the colon
- According to European journal related to cancer, if tumor is developed in the ascending colon, the patient has 63%chances of survival
- If tumor is formed in the descending part then the survival rate will be 59% and if transverse colon is affected then patient will have 66% chances of survival
- Most of the time tumor is surgically removed from the colon or other treatment can be used according to the age and fitness of the patient
- By treating colon cancer the patient can survive up to the five years
Survival rate vary from country to country
- The survival of the patient depends on type of the treatment he/she is getting for treating colon cancer
- In developed countries more advanced techniques are available for treating colon cancer as compared to the developing or underdeveloped countries
- If the colon cancer is diagnosed in the initial stage then it can be cured and if treatment is not given on right time then it can lead to death
- It is studied that survival rate in America is 62% for colon cancer and in Europe it is 43%
Stage of cancer
- Survival of the patient depends on the stage of cancer recognized in testing
- In colon cancer stage I, cancerous tumor is confined to the colon tissue. At this stage it is easy to cure using surgery or chemotherapy
- If colon cancer is treated in stage I then patient can survive up to five years and he/she has 93% of the chances of being cured
- If cancer is recognized in stage three then it becomes difficult to cure because at this stage cancerous tumors shows metastasis i.e. tumors starts spreading to the other near by organs through lymph
- If colon cancer patient is recognized at this stage then percentage of survival decreases to 59% Therefore survival of the patient strictly depends on the stage of colon cancer
- Early detection can increase the chances of curing the disease. If colon cancer is detected in late or advanced stage then many complications arises which decrease the survival rate of the patient
Exercise Exercise benefits normal as well as colon cancer patients. It is proved that exercise can increase the survival rate of the colon cancer patient.
