Chicken Pox and Pregnancy
In pregnancy, any medicine taken for any reason can affect the development of infant. There can be possibly of developing abnormalities in baby. While taking any medicine or vaccine pregnant woman should consult to Doctor.
When pregnant woman exposed to the Varicella
If pregnant woman got infection of virus in childhood then her body contains antibodies against the virus. If she comes in contact with the child or adult infected by the virus she will also encounter with the virus but she will not caused chicken pox. Antibodies against Varicella zoster will kill the virus and protect mother as well as infant.
Immunity test
In pregnancy, different treatments are given. Most of the women don't remember whether they had chicken pox in childhood or not. In such cases blood test is taken to identify presence or absence of the antibodies against virus causing chicken pox.
Complication
- There may be possibility that some may not caused chicken pox in their childhood in such cases if pregnant woman is infected by the virus, it can cause varicella pneumonia.
- Bacterial infection can lead to the ruptured blisters. This infection is external but bacteria can enter inside the body through blood and can harm the development of infant as well as mother.
- Virus can infect to the ganglion (group of nerve cells) causing complexity in vision, walking and speaking.
- It also causes pain in neck and Sevier headache
- Some time varicella infected pregnant woman can die due to the difficulty arose in respiration. Virus entered in the lungs through blood and it can cause lungs inflammation. It leads to disturbance of normal functioning of the liver.
- Chicken pox suffered pregnant woman can causes inflammation in the liver leading to Reye's syndrome. In Reye's syndrome damage can occurred in liver as well as in brain.
Precaution
- If pregnant woman had chicken pox in childhood then her body produces antibodies against virus.
- If pregnant women didn't have chicken pox then she should strictly avoid contact with a child or a person affected by chicken pox.
- Chicken pox is highly contagious disease so there may be possibility that you can also get infection therefore best precaution is keep away from such patient until he/she will cure completely.
To find out if baby is affected
In 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy your infant's organs can be checked by using ultrasound scanning if any problem is created. If any abnormality is observed then doctors will try to solve the problem before child birth.
Avoid
Always avoid vaccination for chicken pox during pregnancy. If you didn't suffer from chicken pox before pregnancy then you should take vaccine immediately. After three months of vaccination you can conceive.

If woman get vaccine for chicken pox during early pregnancy it can develop abnormalities in developing fetus. Baby will get abnormalities in development of the brain, formation of the limbs, mental retardation abnormalities in eye development.
