Cervical Cancer and it's Symptoms

Cervical cancer is the type of cancer related to reproductive system of female. It is a disease which affects cervix of reproductive system. In uterus, cervix forms lower section called as uterine cervix. Uterus is main body; its important function is development of baby after pregnancy. Cervix is middle part that connects uterus and vagina (vagina is birth canal).

Cervix is divided into two parts endocervix and ectocervix. The part nearer to uterus is called as endocervix and part closer to vagina is called as ectocervix. Both parts shows histological difference, endocervix is made up of squamous cells and ectocervix is made up of glandular cells. Squamous and glandular layers are assembled or combined in transformation zone. It is observed that, in most of the cancer patients cervical cancer always starts from transformation zone.

In cervical cancer, normal cells do not show sudden transformation but shows gradual changes. These cells are called pre-cancerous cells. If at pre-cancerous stage cancer is recognized then it can cure completely. We can distinguish per-cancerous cervical cells and cancerous cervical cells by observing them under microscope. According to their characteristics these are divided in to two kind of cervical cancer;

  1. Squamous cell carcinoma
  2. Adenocarcinoma.

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cells are flat, scale like cells that form external covering of the ectocervix. In squamous cell carcinoma squamous cell becomes cancerous.

Adenocarcinoma

Endocervix is lined by glandular cells. Glandular cell are mucus producing cells. If glandular cells become cancerous then it is called adenocarcenoma. In some patients squamous and glandular both types of cell layer becomes cancerous.
