Bronchitis Symptoms
What Is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is swelling of the bronchi or bronchial tubes which carry air into the lungs. Inflammation is one of the chemical reactions in the human body. This creates the pain, swelling and the redness.
Bronchitis can be caused because of:
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Breathing in certain kinds of irritating chemicals
- Smoking
When the cells coated the bronchial tubes are aggravated, the cilia (tiny hairs) that generally catch and remove the things from the outside that stop the working.
When you take breath, hairs near the opening of nostrils clean the pollen, dust, and other particles present in the air. Acute and chronic are two types of the bronchitis. Medical condition of acute occurs quickly and then several actual bronchitis symptoms are also occurred. But these bronchitis symptoms are short-term and last only within few weeks. Acute bronchitis caused because of viruses which affects on respiratory system.
Chronic bronchitis is mild and long term that it takes many months or the years to cure. In this case, bronchial tubes carry on to be red or swollen inflamed, annoyed, and produce mucus on large amount. Smoking is very common cause for occurring the chronic bronchitis.
Types of Bronchitis:
Following are two types of bronchitis:
Causes of Bronchitis:
The major substance responsible for causing chronic bronchitis is smoking. Smoking of substances like tobacco and cigarette affects on the bronchial tubes.
Smoking is responsible for bronchitis while other substances like environmental pollution and kinds of occupational exposures also responsible for causing chronic bronchitis. When you smoke and live or work in the environment which is polluted then there are very chances of causing the chronic bronchitis.
Acute bronchitis is generally occurred because of viruses, and it arises collectively following or with cold or different respiratory infection. Because of coughing, germs like viruses may be spread from person to person. They may also be spread when you touch your nose, eyes or mouth after contacting with the infected person.
The people, who have repeated session of bronchitis with the wheezing, coughing, and shortness of the breath, may also cause asthma.
Mostly bronchitis occurs in the season of cold and flu and generally combined with upper respiratory infection:
- Bronchitis occurs because of viruses, such as influenza A and B, normally known as "flu".
- Bacteria also responsible for causing bronchitis like Mycoplasma pneumoniae that causes walking pneumonia.
- Bronchitis also occurs by inhaling infuriating dusts or fumes. Chemical substances and smoke are also responsible for causing this.
Bronchitis symptoms and signs:
Acute bronchitis frequently starts with an irritating and dry cough that is activated by the swelling of the coating of the bronchial tubes. Other signs and symptoms may include the following:
- Headache
- Cough that may bring up thick white, yellow, or greenish mucus
- Generally mild fever
- Generally feeling ill
- Chills
- Soreness or a feeling of tightness in the chest
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing (a whistling or hissing sound with breathing)
A person suffering from chronic bronchitis takes longer time to get well from cold and common respiratory illnesses. Shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing are become routine activity of life. Breathing can become much difficult.
In most of the cases of bronchitis, many complications can occur and doctor can remove these complications. In following cases patient must consult to the doctor:
- Harsh coughing that disturbs sleep or rest can be minimized using cough medicine prescription.
- Wheezing gives response to the inhaler with the albuterol like Proventil, Ventolin, which open the airways.
- If fever remains for 4 to 5 days continuously then see the doctor for physical examination for removing pneumonia.
- If patient is coughing the blood then see a doctor.
Bronchitis Treatment: Self-Care at Home:
- Many bronchitis treatments are caused because of viral infection. The meaning of this is that bronchitis causes are small and requires a treatment to get relief.
- Antibiotics are not useful to cure viral infection/illness
- Medicines like acetaminophen, aspirin or the ibuprofen will be helpful with the muscle pains and fever.
- Drinking fluids is very necessary to bronchitis patients because in this situation body looses the fluid very fast.
- For decreasing the bronchial frustration, use cool fog vaporizer or the humidifier
- Over-the-counter cough suppressant may be useful. Arrangements with the Robitussin, Mucinex Breonesin (guaifenesin) will loosen emissions.
Treatment on bronchitis may be depends on bronchitis symptoms:
- Medications are helpful for minimizing and loosing the cough and secretions. If coughing spells are started to the patient then it can not under control so see the doctor for the prescription and minimizing the cough. In some of the cases only cycle of coughing may stop but in other cases causes more coughing.
- Bronchodilator inhalers will be useful for opening the airways and minimizing the wheezing.
- In case of treatment of bronchitis, antibiotics plays the partial roles but these are helpful in other conditions such as:
- If doctor supposes the infection because of bacteria then antibiotics will be given to patent.
- People suffering from problems of chronic lung may also generally treat with the antibiotics.
- Patient may be hospitalized very rarely if patient suffering from breathing difficulty and he does not give response to the treatment.
