Bone Cancer Symptoms
What is Bone Cancer?
The cancer which starts in the bone is initially called as bone cancer. Primary bone cancer is comparatively less common than secondary bone cancer or metastatic cancer. Metastatic cancer means which starts in the any organ in the body and then spread into the tissues of the bone.
Bones present in body provides many purposes. Bones protect and support many internal organs such as ribs give protection to lungs, skull gives to brain etc. For making body movement muscles drag alongside the bones.
Bone cancer is mostly occurring in the legs and arms but it may occur in any part of bone in the body. It typically found in young people and children rather than adults. Primary bone cancer is frequently called as sarcomas. There are many types of sarcomas that initiated in many kinds of tissues of bone. Common types are chondrosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma and osteosarcoma.
Chondrosarcoma is commonly found in the adults. Cancer of this type forms in the rubbery tissue, cartilage, all around the joints.
Ewing's sarcoma normally found in people whose age is in between 10- 25. Youngsters are affected mostly. Cancer is initiated at the middle part of the larger bone. Middle part is also called as shaft. This cancer affects the long bone (thing) and hipbones. Ribs also get affected.
Osteosarcoma primary bone cancer is the commonly found in the young people. Peoples whose age in between 10 to 25 are get affected mostly. This type of cancer is occurred mostly in males rather than female. It starts in bone ending and affects on bones of legs and arms.
Cancer that started in the bone is very rare. It is not usual to spread the tumor over the other part of the body. When all of these happen then it is not called as the primary bone cancer. Every type of tumor is named for the tissues or organs that begin the cancer. Tumor which spreads the disease has the same name as origin or primary cancer.
Treatment to the cancer is depending on the type of origin of cancer and that started to spread. Nearly about eighty percent of this metastatic injury is from the type of primary mainly of the prostate, breast, lung, thyroid, kidney, stomach and pancreas.
Bone cancer symptoms:
The common symptom of bone cancer is pain. But the bone cancer symptoms are varies depending on size and location of bone cancer. Bone cancer symptoms of cancer that arises in joint or near to the joint are tenderness, swelling, and stiffness. Effect of bone cancer is that bones get weaken which leads to the fracture.
General bone cancer symptoms include the following:
- Exhaustion
- Weight loss
- Fever
- Anemia.
Causes of Bone Cancer:
Following are some of the causes of the bone cancer:
- Li-Fraumeni syndrome - Because of this condition, risks may be increased like increasing other type of cancer including breast cancer, osteosarcoma, brain cancer and many more.
- Rothmund-Thomson syndrome - This syndrome causes small stature, rashes, skeletal difficulty, and major chance of bone cancer.
- Hereditary retinoblastoma - Children who have this type uncommon type of cancer have chances of increase of the osteosarcoma.
- Multiple exostoses - This is inherited condition in which children suffering causes cartilage bumps having chances of increasing the chondrosarcoma.
Diagnosis of Bone Cancer:
Creating the pain is very common symptom of the bone cancer. Pathologic fracture may also be occurring and it is normally occur in lower side rather than upper side.
The presenting the radiologic searched on x-ray is causes damage of the bone. With the primary knowledge of primary malignant tumor in a patient presenting with the destructive lesion of bone, painful, a diagnosis of metastatic cancer can be completed with some guarantee. The individual who is not suffering from the primary cancer, early lesion of metastatic bone becomes very painful.
A MRI, CAT scan, radionuclide bone scan or skeletal survey may be completed to identify which bone has been affected.
Treatment of Bone Cancer:
The treatment of the bone cancer, particularly for metastatic cancer has the following two goals, management of the symptoms produced by the local lesion and management of the neoplasm.
For treating the bone metastasis, two methods are used. One is Systemic therapy and other is Local therapy. Systemic therapy intended at the cells of cancer that spread throughout the body which contain hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and munotherapy. Local therapy intended to kill the cells of cancer in one of the particular part in the body which includes surgery and radiation therapy.
Surgery - frequently has to be wide in which large margin of the tissue around the cancer must be removed. Sarcoma involves the muscles which remove entire group of muscle that are affected. Radiation therapy - Radiation therapy is used for prevention of radiosensitive cancer's local recurrences. This may be after or before the surgery.
Chemotherapy - Many drugs are effective on the bone and tissues of bone sarcomas in treatment. This gives good chance for cure the disease but have many side effects. This may includes cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin (Adriamycin), high-dose methotrexate (with leucovorin rescue), ifosfamide, vincristine, decarbonizes, dactinomycin (Actinomycin D), investigational agents and etoposide. These drugs combination may also used.
Hormone therapy - In the Hormone therapy, removes the organ of the body which creates the hormone or promotes the particular type of hormones or uses the drugs which keep the hormone from increasing the cancer growth.
Biphosphonates - This is one of the types of drug that is used for reducing the pains occur in the bones and slows down damage of the bone.
Even if a bone or soft tissue sarcoma is appears to be localized and could apparently be completely removed, there is still significant risk that tumor cells too small to detect have already spread to other places in the body. Additional treatment with chemotherapy (adjuvant chemotherapy) attempts to eliminate these tumor deposits.
There are also safe and effective ways to treat pain. Medications can allow people to be free of pain so that they can continue the activities that are important to them.
