Bipolar Disorder Therapy

Researchers believe that patients with bipolar disorders can recover effectively when they are treated with therapies and medications. Therapies are effective than the medicines, as they make easy to manage the bipolar symptoms, its causes, family relationships and other psychological disorders. Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy and family focused therapy are the major therapies used for treating the bipolar disorder.

Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy

Interpersonal therapy can be effectively used to solve problems in the family and social relationships and improve these relationships also. This therapy helps to solve the interpersonal problems and decreases the stress situations in life. Stress is the primary causes of bipolar disorders, and it reduces the chances of mood swings by family oriented approach.

Interpersonal therapy is always used with combination of social rhythm therapy. According to this therapy, interrupting the natural body rhythm (Circadian rhythm) and sleep deprivation can causes the bipolar symptoms or can make the existing symptoms worse. In some cases where this therapy is used, some techniques of Cognitive Behavioral therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy are used to manage the routine of the patients with bipolar disorders.

The therapist needs to understand the routine, circadian routine and other activities of the patient. These activities include sleeping, eating, stress reduction and exercise. When the therapist understands all details of the routine, then the therapist can recommend to continue the same routine without any break and can deal with the issues in that routine life. The main benefit of this therapy is that people are trained to acquire the necessary skills that help them to maintain their social and family relations.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

As per the cognitive-Behavior therapy the patient's emotions are affected by the thoughts, and the negative thoughts behaviors are converted into the positive attitude. This therapy is focused on managing the symptoms of the bipolar disorders, solving the issues and reducing the chances of bipolar symptoms.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

This therapy includes shock therapy in treating the bipolar disorder patients which is a controversial treatment for depression and bipolar disorders. It has some side effects like memory loss in many cases. The benefit of this therapy is that the major depression can be treated effectively through the shock therapy and patients don't need to use medications at high level to reduce the severity of the depression. A patient needs to go through the ECT treatment for three times in a week, and generally this treatment will be performed for twelve times. During this treatment, some chemicals are released into the brain. These chemicals are neurotransmitters that help to transfer signals among the brain cells. Hence, the chemical messenger makes the brain functions better and improves the patient's mood.

All these treatment and therapies are preferred as per the patient's medical and physical conditions.
