Bile Acid Reflux
Bile acid is inhibit growth of Helicobacter pylori in vitro. It occurs when the digestive fluid produced in the liver flows in the upward direction from the small intestine into the esophagus and intestine. Bile reflux accompanies with acid reflux and inflames the lining of the esophagus increasing the risk of esophageal cancer. Bile reflux is also responsible for inflaming the stomach unlike acid reflux causing burning and gnawing pain in the upper abdomen.
The reason behind the acid reflux includes lifestyle, certain food, smoking, alcohol, but the reason behind the bile reflux are seems unrelated to lifestyle factors. It can't be controlled by changing lifestyle and diet.
Below are some symptoms of bile reflux:
Bile reflux shows similar symptoms as that of acid reflux. Bile reflux also causes inflammation unlike acid reflux within the stomach creating burning and biting pain in upper part of the abdomen. There are other symptoms such as nausea, frequent heartburn, cough in the throat and vomiting bile. Along with symptoms, bile may create complications such as:
- Barrett's esophagus: Long term exposure to the stomach acid or bile occurs this condition that changes the color and tissue composition. The newly formed cells are able to face the stomach acid but may become cancerous.
- Gastritis: Gastritis is the complication caused by one and only bile. Irritation and inflammation within the stomach are the indications to differentiate the gastric. However, it is not a serious condition but may cause stomach bleeding, ulcers and in some cases it may increase stomach cancer.
- Esophageal stricture: Scar tissue is the tissue that may cause a stricture or a narrowing in the tube that may increase risk of choking and swallowing.
- Esophageal Cancer: There may be possibility of cancer if the esophagus has been exposed to extended stomach acid or bile. Cancer caused by the stomach bile is a serious and difficult to treat.
Treatment for bile reflux and acid reflux:
Below are some treatments to treat bile reflux and acid reflux together-
- Ursodexycholic acid: This very common method, which is used to treat bile reflux. This acid helps to encourage the flow of bile.
- Proton Pump inhibitors: Proton pump inhibitors is the best way to treat bile acid and acid reflux especially for the people who are suffering from Barrett's esophagus and GERD. These medications help to block acid production and reduce the effects of bile reflux.
- Other Medications: Other drugs may be suggested to improve the flow of food through the stomach if bile reflux is the result of stomach taking too long to empty.
However, it is very hard to control bile reflux unlike acid reflux that can be treated by changing diet and lifestyle. It can be treated only by surgery and by some specific medications. Also there is possibility of plague sufferers because of bile reflux.
