What is sinus infection?
Sinus infection is the inflammation of one or more sinuses, which is also called as sinusitis. Sinus is nothing but hollow cavities within the bones of face and is lined by the mucous membrane.
These mucus membranes produce fluid that usually drains into the nasal passages. When these drainage sites get blocked the drainage of the sinus stops that leads into the development of sinus infection.
However, there are various factors behind sinus infection but viral infection is the important factor amongst all that may also cause due the bacteria present in the environment.
What are the factors behind sinus infection?
There are various pollen grains, bacteria and other environmental factors including pollution that causes sinus infection but some several airborne substances that are also responsible for causing sinus infection. These substances are inhaled through mouth and nose. Many of these can lead into various sinus infections.
Some pollen particles released by flowers enter into the body through breathing. However, the mucus present in sinuses, trap this dirt entering lungs. But sometimes it fails to manage with the relentless onslaught that the mucus doesn't get drainage properly. This condition leads into infection and blocking or nasal. Mostly, pollen and ragweed are responsible for leading allergies giving hay fever that may be serious problem. The most common symptoms of sinus infections are;
- Headaches
- Sore throat
- Pain in upper jaw
- Facial pain
- Thick and colored nasal drainage
- Softness of sinus area
- Swollen eyelids
- Runny nose
- Watery and itchy eyes
- Sneezing
- Allergic shiners
Most of people with sinus infection often have asthma that may give symptom of coughing as a first indication or symptom of asthma. But cough may be because of other reasons also.
Sinus infections are of different categories based on its time-consuming period. They are such as,
- Acute sinusitis: In this condition infections present for two to four weeks but not more than four. This category includes some classic symptoms of facial pain, nasal congestion, fever, headache, cough, nasal drip and nasal discharge.
- Recurrent sinusitis: There may three or more sinus infections per year. This condition happens because of improper treatment of chronic sinus infection.
- Subacute sinusitis: This infection remains for more than four but less than eight weeks. However, the symptoms in this condition are less severe including post nasal drip or nasal congestion.
- Chronic sinusitis: Duration of this infection may be of eight weeks or more than and is similar to that of subacute sinusitis. This condition is also having mild symptoms such as post nasal drip, headaches, fatigue, chronic cough etc.
