- Antacids: These are alkali products that neutralize the acid and come in pills and liquids. The medicine gives quick relief from heartburn. It can be used for mild or infrequent sessions of heartburn.
- Prokinetic drugs: These drugs help to speed up the passage of food through stomach. The drugs in this include metoclopramide and domperidone. These medications are used in belching and bloating symptoms.
- Acid-suppressing drugs: This drug is usually advised as you get signs or symptoms of acid reflux. The acid-suppressing drugs are available in two groups as histamine receptor blockers (H2 blockers) and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Both groups are effective in reducing the amount of acid in different ways. Drugs in H2 blockers include famotidine, cimetidine, ranitidine and nizatidine. The other PPIs group includes drugs such as Lansoprazole, omeprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole and pantoprazole
- Surgery: Surgery is the option if the other treatment won't help. It can provide relief for acid reflux. It tightens the lower esophagus and prevents acid leaking up from stomach. Mostly 'Keyhole' surgery is used in the treatment.
