Acid Reflux Exercise
As we know that acid reflux is also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It affects millions of people every year. There are various symptoms that indicate the presence of acid reflux. However, heartburn is one of them and a very common symptom. The reason behind the disease is ascension of stomach acid into the esophagus that may affect your day-to-day living. Acid reflux can be cured by various ways including lifestyle change, use of remedies of both chemical and herbal, by accepting right sleeping way and many more.
Managing weight is also important to cure acid reflux that needs an exercise, which plays a very important role in reducing extra weight gain. However, there are some exercises that are actually responsible for causing acid reflux. Exercise does not cause heart burn, but for the people affecting with chronic acid reflux, heartburn is possible, especially if there is jarring and high-impact exercises such as jogging and fitness exercises. Some people may seem acid reflux if they have stomach exercises. However, it is very rare that there is heartburn because of exercise if the person doesn't have chronic heartburn.
Even though, you may feel heartburn either during or after performing certain exercise. But, it doesn't mean that you should have to stop your exercise; in fact there are various other ways that may help to prevent exercise induced heartburn. You may go through some suggestions given below,
- Eating should be sensible before exercising: The food you are going to take should be high in carbohydrates and low in fat and protein. You have to avoid caffeinated beverages, chocolates, citrus fruits and juice, spicy and fatty food. These diets are responsible for increasing risk of acid reflux.
- Drink plenty of water: Proper level of water in our body is very important aid digestive system and keeps you well hydrated. As per guidance, eight glass of water is perfect measurement for all. The people with acid reflux may use water during exercise as per guidelines given by their doctor and instructor. Mostly, it will be beneficial to take cool water 30 minutes before exercise. You can sip 16 oz of cool water after every 15 minutes during exercise. The amount should be changed on the basis of intensity and length of your exercise.
- Must to avoid exercise directly after eating: You have to wait for one to two hours for start your exercise after eating. Exercise on full stomach puts pressure on the sphincter that may increase the chances of acid reflux.
- Consult doctor before medication: You may take remedies such as H2 blocker (Pepcid, Zantac, etc) or any other prescription medication after consulting with your doctor before exercising.
There are some specific exercises that the people with acid reflux may try to do. Breathing exercise is one of them that may help a bit to improve the patient. This exercise helps to stomach muscles to work better again. Keep your hand on the stomach while you are exercising. During this breathing your stomach goes out when you take an in-breath and goes in when you release your breath. It will be difficult for first time but will help to keep the stomach smaller. However, you may do this exercise in any position you happen to be, sitting, laying down and standing.
Exercise during pregnancy can also affect acid reflux. During pregnancy the level of estrogen and progesterone in the body get elevated. There are various types of exercises including yoga that are used during pregnancy. There are no any movements such as jarring, jerking and bouncing in yoga that mostly helpful for pregnant women. To lend the gravity a hand is the best exercise during pregnancy that can affect acid reflux. This exercise helps to pull the acid reflux down into the throat.
During pregnancy avoid bending for extended period. One more thing, you have to avoid exercise involving great deal of bouncing. It may encourage acid reflux back into the esophagus, if you have suffered from acid reflux.
