What is Acid Reflux?
It is the condition where the gastric juice containing acid and pepsin travels back into esophagus from stomach. Pepsin is an enzyme that starts the digestion of proteins. Esophagus is the gullet or swallowing tube. Acid reflux is also known as GERD. The liquid may affects or damage the lining of the esophagus. It is believed that acid is the injurious component of refluxed liquid.
Pepsin and bile present in refluxed liquid may also injurious for the esophagus but still the damage is not clear as the role of acid. GERD is a life long chronic condition and may return within a few months after stopping the treatment; there fore it is necessary to continue the treatment.
The reason behind the disease is still unclear but the researches shows that the people with GERD, LES relaxes as the process of working of esophagus is continuing. The disease affects the quality and every day activities of life. It is also responsible for causing heartburn and trouble ness in some cases. The disease may last for several months or longer if not treated. The treatment for the disease needs for short period but if the symptoms reoccurs, it needs to repeat.
Acid reflux is a lifelong and chronic illness that can be treated and can avoid it to spread in a big way by following some procedures. You can limit the affects of acid reflux by eating specific diet. Acid reflux is dangerous at night rather than in day. The reflux occurs when the individuals lying down. This position is easier because the gravity does not oppose in the upright position that does in the upright position during day.
During treatment several changes are beneficial to cure the disease. Morning and evening meals are helpful to reduce the amount of reflux. There are some foods that reduce the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter. The person suffered by this disease must to avoid the food like chocolate, alcohol, caffeinated milk and peppermint.
There are some factors such as pregnancy, large meals, heavy eating habits, hiatus hernia, bending forward, smoking, asthma, peptic ulcers, alcohol and insufficient digestive enzymes that cause acid reflux. It gives symptoms such as chest pain, asthma, dysphagia, dental erosion, hoarseness, regurgitation.
Acid reflux can be cured by various ways but most of people got better results by making changes to their diet. Some diet is very helpful and safe for heartburn sufferers. Below are some foods and drinks that causes irritation and heartburn,
